Guess: A Brief History

While Georges Marciano initially envisioned selling Guess products exclusively in high-end stores like Bloomingdale’s, his brothers had a broader distribution strategy, including discount retailers. The resulting differences in vision led to internal conflicts, and in September 1993, Georges sold his stake in the company to his brothers for $214.2 million. The purchase was financed through borrowing, and Guess went public in July 1996 to raise additional funds.

In the late 1990s, the brand refocused on improving investment returns after experiencing a drop in sales. In 2001, Guess restated fiscal year 2000 results due to inventory write-downs. The accessories department saw significant expansion in 2004, accompanied by store redesigns across the United States. This period also marked the introduction of the upscale female line named Marciano.

Going Global

Guess continued to thrive in the 2000s, promoting its Guess Kids clothing line and expanding into factory retail stores. The Marciano brothers, Maurice and Paul, remained co-chairmen and co-CEOs, with Maurice overseeing design and sales growth while Paul managed branding and advertising. The brand expanded globally, with a significant presence in the United States and Canada.

In 2012, supermodel Claudia Schiffer posed for Guess’s 30th anniversary, 23 years after her initial collaboration with the brand. In 2017, Camila Cabello became the face of Guess, followed by Jennifer Lopez in 2018.

The GUESS store at Aventura Mall offers an extensive collection of skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, bandage dresses, party dresses, occasion dresses, little black dresses, jumpsuits, rompers, jackets, outerwear, boots and more. Additionally, the store also features handbags, footwear and watches. The GUESS Aventura Mall store is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm and on Sundays from 11 am to 8 pm.
