In 2019, the iconic Turnberry Isle resort in the heart of Aventura, Florida, underwent a transformative $265 million expansion and renovation project. Now known as the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, it’s celebrated as a top-notch golfing destination. It’s home to the renowned Turnberry Isle Country Club, featuring not one but two championship golf courses.

Championship Golf Courses

The Soffer Course

Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Gus Grantham in the early 1970s, the Soffer Course underwent significant enhancements under the expert guidance of Raymond Floyd in 2007. These improvements introduced engaging contours and elevation changes, making it a challenging yet visually appealing course.

Players must navigate numerous creeks and lagoons, which strategically cut across fairways and landing areas. Pristine white bunkers and Tif Eagle greens elevate the playing experience. At 7,000 yards from the tips, the Soffer Course has hosted many PGA and LPGA tournaments, providing a tough but enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels. The par-4 18th hole is a memorable finale, as it demands a precise second shot to reach a green that extends into a peninsula.

The Miller Course

Also designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and refined by Raymond Floyd during the 2007 renovation, the Miller Course offers a more forgiving experience. At 6,400 yards from the back tees, it’s shorter but no less enjoyable.

With two-thirds of the course meandering alongside resort lakes, accurate tee shots and approach play are paramount. Rolling fairways and well-contoured greens create a quintessential Florida-style experience, making it an ideal warm-up for the Soffer Course.

Facilities and Policies

The golf course at Turnberry Isle offers a range of facilities for golfers, including in-house professional assistance and the option to rent clubs and carts. They also have banquet facilities for hosting special events and occasions. When it comes to pricing, green fees vary based on the day of the week. Weekday rounds are available at prices ranging from $60 to $295, while weekend golf can also be enjoyed in the same price range.

However, there are certain policies to keep in mind; metal spikes are not allowed on the course, and there is a dress code that mandates collared shirts and Bermuda shorts while prohibiting denim. For added convenience, they accept a variety of credit cards, including VISA, MasterCard, Amex, and Discover.

Shops and Dining

Turnberry Isle’s golf offerings include a well-equipped clubhouse, where you can gather and relax after your game. Their golf shop offers a variety of essential gear you might need for a successful round. If you’re looking to hone your skills, there’s a convenient driving range and a putting green for practice. Juniors can get in on the action with a dedicated golf program.

After your golf session, treat yourself to a delightful dining experience at Corsair, the resort’s signature restaurant and bar. They serve some lip-smacking gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads and delightful entrées. Plus, you can enjoy your food while taking in the scenic views of the golf course, which is a plus in my book.
